The crane wife
Through my time enrolled in an experimental image creation course this semester, I’ve had the opportunity to step out of a place of comfort and start working more with my hands to design a body of work based off my interpretation of an essay that I find deeply meaningful; The Crane Wife, written by CJ Hauser for the Paris review. You can find the essay here.
There are no prompts or rules, we just make images that relate to how the text makes us feel. The Crane Wife is all about realizing that it’s okay to have emotional needs and pushing yourself to embrace those to form healthy relationships with people who make you feel cared for. These images are my response to the text, and more personally to the realization that I was suppressing my own needs.
We’ve created a lot of work this semester, these are just some of my favorites. I’ve organized them by pairings I’ve made based off of visual and thematic similarities.
Opening Up
Lost Connection
Reach
Radiant Warmth
Spaces on Fire
Birds of a Feather
Some process that didn’t make it into a pairing
